Mathematicians We Have Studied

Joseph LaGrange
LaGrange was instrumental in the development of the metric system.  We discuss his accomplishments when we cover chapter 9.  We also have fun with his Four Square Theorem, which proves that every positive integer can be expressed as the sum of four or less square numbers.  More information can be found at this website.
Eratosthenes
Eratosthenes was a jack-of-all-trades, who worked with prime numbers and even measured the circumference of the earth.  We discuss his accomplishments when we cover chapter 3.  The students get to use the famous Sieve of Eratosthenes to find all the prime numbers between 1 and 100.  More information can be found at this website.
Charles Dodgson
Charles Dodgson is better known by his pseudonym, Lewis Carroll.  Many people know him for his book Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.  He has many other published works, but most of them are in the field of Mathematics! We discuss his accomplishments when we cover lesson 5-6.  Students enjoy solving Dodgson's Doublets, which are fun word games. More information can be found at this website.
